ŽALGIRIS ARENA

LARGEST AND MOST MODERN WATER SPORTS CENTRE IN THE REGION

THE PROJECT AND ITS REQUIREMENTS

Idyllically situated on an island in the River Nemunas adjacent to the „Žalgiris“ arena, the multifunctional water sports centre is an architectural highlight in the centre of the city of Kaunas. In order to retain the landscape and character of the area, the building structure was executed as a transparent glass/aluminium combination. The interaction of different proportions, shapes, materials and levels underlines its successful visual integration into the surroundings.

THE SOLUTION

The structure had to be adapted to the height differences of the surrounding landscape and this had an influence on the proportions as well as on the functional and technical solutions for the building connections. Concrete dominates the building, which is a steel-reinforced concrete monolith. The roof of the swimming pool consists of combined metal/concrete support beams.
In close cooperation with UAB „Delta Nova“, Calenberg supplied its Ciparall sliding bearings, which are tailored to the demanding requirements of the project. This ensures the long-term durability and structural integrity of the roof structure.
