Jewel of the Creek
COMPLEX OF 17 HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS AROUND A YACHT HARBOUR
THE PROJECT AND ITS REQUIREMENTS
This impressive project in Deira on the banks of the creek offers 1,000,000 m² of space for 17 wave-shaped high-rise buildings around a yacht harbour. The skilful mixed use of the complex for living, commerce, hotels and leisure particularly stands out and is a striking landmark in Dubai. In addition, the complex is enhanced by an inner creek with promenade, an artificial island with a traffic-free ground floor and luxury hotel, Dubai‘s longest swimming pool, 6400 underground parking spots and much more besides. In view of the size and uniqueness of the project, quite a few things had to be considered with regard to the structure and stability.
THE SOLUTION
As a result of the wide-spanning structures, movements occur due to creep and shrinkage as the concrete cures. In order to absorb additional deformations with the least possible friction and without damage in case of an earthquake, specially modified Civalit sliding bearings were developed and successfully employed. Due to the delicate design, Ciparall sliding bearings with a higher load capacity were installed in some places in order to allow the expected movements here, too, while at the same time absorbing large-scale torsion resulting from sagging and component tolerances as planned.
