HIGH-SPEED RAIL LINE BETWEEN ANKARA AND IZMIR
BALLAST CONSERVATION WITH CALENBERG’S CIPROTEC BALLAST MAT
THE PROJECT AND ITS REQUIREMENTS
This prestigious railway project is just one of the Turkish State Railways’ 54 projects to advance the expansion of the rail network in Turkey. The new 624-km Ankara–Izmir High-Speed Rail is designed for speeds reaching 250 km/h and connects to the existing Ankara–Konya line. The railway line is designed to carry both passengers and freight, with an annual freight capacity of 90 million tonnes. Whilst passengers benefit from a significantly shorter journey time and greater comfort when travelling between these two major cities, freight companies are offered a faster and more efficient rail service. The significant reduction in emissions is another positive side effect, since it is a lower-carbon alternative to current transport options. This major infrastructure project covers a total of 49 tunnels, 67 viaducts, 81 bridges and hundreds of underpasses and overpasses.
THE SOLUTION
Calenberg was commissioned to supply significant quantities of Ciprotec 6018 ballast mats and highly elastic rail pads made from microcellular EPDM elastomer, which meet the highest quality and performance standards. The mentioned elastic components increase the elasticity of the ballast superstructure and the rigid track significantly. They reduce the mechanical stress on individual components thanks to improved load distribution, while maximising the service life of the entire system. Another advantage: The precise adjustment of stiffness ensures seamless transitions between different superstructure systems.
