REDESIGN OF THE STATION AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

BALLAST CONSERVATION WITH CALENBERG’S CIPROTEC BALLAST MATS

THE PROJECT AND ITS REQUIREMENTS

A new station with a striking timber roof and a modernised station precinct with commercial space has been built in Ede-Wageningen. The construction and design were all about sustainability. Following its complete renovation, the station not only looks impressive but, as a key transport hub, is also well equipped to cope with rising passenger numbers and increased rail traffic. The complex construction project comprised the renewal of turnouts, tracks, signals and overhead lines, as well as a new passenger tunnel and a footbridge. The tight schedule was a challenge, because train traffic had to be completely suspended during the construction work. Three kilometres of track and cables were replaced very quickly so that train services could resume.

THE SOLUTION

The high volume of traffic posed particular challenges to the service life of the ballast superstructure. Various types of Calenberg Ciprotec were installed on sections of the track to protect the ballast and concrete in the long term. The ballast mats, made of premium rubberfibre composite, provide increased elasticity in the ballasted track, reduce ballast compression and help to ensure a stable track bed.

Ciprotec is made from 100 % recyclable elastomers and has a geotextile (GRK 5) laminated to its upper surface. Ciprotec contributed to this sustainable project by helping to reduce environmental impact and conserve resources.
